The Flash is one of Americas most loved superhero comic books stars. He posses super human powers of lightening speed and instant reflexes. Every Flash has been a member of the Justice Society of America or the Justine League.

The Flash is not just one superhero but is the name of several superheroes of if you like a superhero that has been developed in several incarnations.

Flash number one was Jay Garrick created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert in 1940. Barry Allen was Flash number two and reigned from 1956 to 1986. Of all the Flashes Barry Allen has remained one of the most popular in all time.Wally West was Flash number three, right up until 2006 until Bart Allen became the most recent Flash today.

The long life of Flash comic books may be divided up into four eras. These are the Golden age, the Silver Age, a flash of two worlds and now the modern age.

The Flash of the golden age and the very first Flash Comic Book appeared in January 1940. Jay Garrick became the first superhero that posed only one super human trait. His faster than light speed was the result of inhaling hard water vapors.

Jay Garrick is a founding member of the Justice Society of America. Certainly he was phenomenally popular with readers for many years. Unfortunately the popularity of all comic books suffered with a post war decline. Eventually in 1949 the last issue of Flash Comics was run, issue 104.

The silver age of Flash began in 1956 with a revival of Americas favorite superheroes. DC's successful revival was due to the fact that they did not simply re-release dated old characters as other comic book publishes had tried before them. DC comic books reinvented their characters for the modern age. Flash was the first of the revivals in the silver age and appeared in a series of comic books simply called "showcase"

New Flash was Barry Allen, who was not a college student but a police scientist who haplessly gained his superpowers if lightning speed after a freak chemical accidental bathing. Certainly old Flash was not ignored it was featured that Barry Allen selected his superhero after reading about the Jay Garrick in a comic book.

Barry Allen was soon to appear in his own Flash comic book series that began as issue number 105 rights where there first Flash comic left off.

Later came "Flash of two worlds" with an interesting twist revealing that both Jay Garrick and Barry Allen co existed on parallel worlds. Their powers allowed that they would meet and become friends. Thus two worlds, the golden age and the silver age together.

In an incredible unimagined twist in the 1980s, Barry Allen was given a heroic death. Yes! A superhero died. Thankfully due to the ability of comic books to bring their own super feats and some exciting time travel Barry Allen was able to make appearances from time to time after his death.

Finally the modern age began. It is interesting to note that Wally West was introduced in earlier Flash comics as Kid Flash, Barry Allen's nephew, who through the same devices as his uncle, developed the flash powers. On his uncle's death he adopted the name Flash for himself. The Flash volume 2 was born.

The Flash Volume 2, although was canceled, number 230 in January 2006. This was not the end. In true comic book style, a new series emerged "The Flash: The Fastest man Alive" began in June of the same year but only ran for 13 issues.

O what an intricate world is this of superheroes and lash comics. Flash Volume 2 was revived in its place and continued at issue 231. A series called "All Flash" was written to act as a bridge between the two series. This enabled Flash Volume 2 #231 to become "Flash: The Fastest man Alive" issue number 15.

Certainly Flash comic books are interesting but the development and careful planning of the Flash chain series is a whole point of fascination on its own.

What is the best Captain Marvel (DC) series to get into the character?

I'd consider myself a pretty avid comic book reader, though up until now I've been mostly Marvel. I've got a pretty extensive knowledge about Superman, Batman, The JLA and a lot of different main heroes in the DC universe, but I've always been interested in Captain Marvel of DC. However, I haven't really known what comic to start getting into Captain Marvel with. I'd really prefer collections because they're easier to find and more convenient. What series should I start with? Thanks.

I don't really read Captain Marvel but I'd read Kingdom Come. It's in a different continuity, but it's great all the same.

Close Encounters Of The 'comic'al Kind !

It's a bird...It's a plane.... It's Pravin Nair !

I woke up from my dream.Damn,the shrill Alarm Clock.It always had to scream at the most inappropriate( or is it appropriate?) of times.. It was an amazing dream.

I had just saved the world from the vile plottings of Lex Luthor, my greatest villain.I was looking smashing in my red cape & was about to kiss the love of my life, Louis Lane, when damn, I got 'alarm'ed.

I was smiling to myself.A movie in technicolour detail, vivid & spectacular.I was the hero probably for the first & last time ever.

And I did all this real gracefully, wearing my inners over my bodysuit

I grew up on a diet of comics & storybooks.

Literally.Like all children of my age, I would be obsessed with comics.So, whether it was to be the 'Marvel'lous superheroes(Spiderman,Incredible Hulk,& gang), the 'Action' heroes(Superman),DC comics(Batman), comics was my lifeline..

Comics transported me to the world of fantasy. You must have heard the expression Boys with Toys?Well, comics were my only toys.With no other avenue for entertainment and with my hormones yet to kick in & the advent of Baywatch, Pamela Anderson & Playboy(in that order) yet to happen, comics was the favourite pastime.Every new comic issue of my favourite superhero would be a delight. With sweaty palms and an excited heart beating away so loud you would fear it would burst,  I recollect holding a new issue as if it were the love of my life.

I think one thing comics clearly taught me was 'hero worship'.

I remember aping, fantasising(yes my fantasies were so innocent then) rescuing trapped, scared civilians.My favourite fantasy was stopping a running train right in its tracks with sheer force of my arms.The train in this case would be my cousin who would try to push me(of course it was a mock push, he was elder to me).
I would push back and if he stopped in his tracks, it would give me that  false sense of strength.Yessir, the train comes to a screeching halt, no brakes.Look ma, no sweat, just hands! I also remember foolishly jumping off from verandahs,trying to imitate Superman, landing on my butt, and ensuring a real sore one for quite some days.A chipped tooth is what I still have as a memento.

I guess even now, I have not been entirely cured of these superhero fantasies.Like displaying foolish bravado in taking on a guy twice my size (Yes not exaggerating, it happened in the local trains,but that's another story).

So, why do comics & superheroes play such an important role in our lives?I believe it is because as humans, right from childhood, we believe in magic & miracles.Our minds are pre-disposed & very favourably so, towards the magical. We want to believe in mythic figures that fly, that can move mountains, kill the evil. We want to see good triumph over evil. And that is why we need a hero.This hero worshipping then takes different forms & structures, extending to other realms like sports,politics, films. Superheroes become very important markers of pop culture. They embody everything that is fantastic.All the qualities that we aspire or dream about.Strength, courage, brawn, victory. Sacrifice.They become the Icons.

All comics with superheroes borrow extensively from mythology(not possible to cover that in this blog, would be extensive).For example, Achilles the mythic Greek warrior was all powerful except for a weakness, his heel .Legend has it that as a baby he was dipped in the Styxian River to make him omnipotent but his heels were esposed and not submerged in the waters..Hence,Achilles became powerful all across except for his heel.So Achilles heel enters our collective phraseology, referring to any weak spot that could leave us vulnerable or well, make us...heel.

Also, in Hindu Mythology, Duryodhana's Achilles Heel is actually his thigh! He loses the battle with Bhima when a blow is strategically placed to his thigh..My point is, they were the first superheroes.Characters such as Rama or Krishna.Yes, they didn't wear capes, or spin webs.But they took on monsters, took on an army of people, were loved by all, and they respected humanity.

The only Superman Action Figure that I remember from the 1980s is in the Super Powers line. Your best bet would be a store that deals in comic books and related stuff. You could always try ebay too.
