Is OJ Mayo Superstar Material?
Is OJ Mayo superstar material? There are some that say yes and others who say that he is performing like a mediocre player in the NBA. OJ Mayo is a 21 year old player who is currently signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was the number 3 draft pick in 2008 where he was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves and then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Some say that he is not living up to the hype that he is the greatest basketball player in the country.
Those who do not feel that OJ Mayo is living up to his potential, however, should take a look at his background. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia. He played an impressive basketball game at Huntington High School where he was scouted by college basketball scouts across the country. He earned a scholarship to the University of Southern California where he played for one year, an impressive season.
After one year of college, OJ Mayo decided to seek an agent and get drafted into the NBA. Once a college player makes this choice, there is no turning back. His scholarship was cancelled. He took a chance on his basketball skills and went to play with the professionals. He was drafted and traded and now plays with the Grizzlies.
Some are saying that his playing is good, but not stellar. Currently, he is averaging about 10 points per game and playing for about 30 minutes each game. True, he sits on the bench more than he plays basketball, but he is learning the sport. And many feel that there is no better way to learn than from professionals who have been playing basketball for many more years than OJ Mayo. His skills, while not yet of superstar caliber, are still impressive. And he is only 21 years old - he has quite a few years to develop those skills to become one of the all time greats.
Those who feel that OJ Mayo is not living up to his hype are forgetting that he just about jumped into the major leagues from high school. He only played one year of college ball before signing on to the NBA. This is an impressive feat in itself. Most of the NBA players have many more years of experience at playing college and professional basketball than OJ Mayo, but he is still holding his own among them.
You may hear about OJ Mayo in times to come as being one of the all time greats in the game of basketball. His name may soon be linked with other greats such as Michael Jordan, Larry Byrd, Wilt Chamberlain and others. Or, he may fade into obscurity. However, most people agree that at 21 years old, he has quite a bit of time to make his mark in the game of basketball and may very well have the last laugh on his critics and he continues to hone his skills and play professional basketball with players who have been in the game for quite a long time and can teach him much about this sport.
