The 09' All Slacker Fantasy Football Team

Every year I seem to draft with somebody who doesn’t do any homework at all and basically drafts his team based on what he saw in 08’ or years past. You’ll probably see him picking up a fantasy magazine on the way to the draft and asking everybody a million questions during the draft about who is on what team now, who is injured and other things of that nature. On one hand it’s good because you know they will miss opportunities only drafting players they are comfortable with. On the other hand, you know this will be the first guy to start talking trash if somehow his team gets off to a hot start and he really has no idea what he’s doing. I guess that’s one of the reasons this game is so popular.

If you are one of those people, congratulations on making the effort to do some research this year, you might want to check out some player rankings and my other blog entries as well. As a matter of fact, I would prefer that you go there now, this article will only help you slack even more.

Here’s a quick rundown of what this person’s team might look like this year based on player rankings, mock drafts and what I feel should be available. For the sake of time I just choose to pick 6th because it’s in the middle and to only have 12 rounds:

1. LaDainian Tomlinson- although he’s going in the 2nd round of most expert drafts, this guy still thinks he’s a top 3 value.

2. Clinton Portis- may actually provide good value in the second round but he’s just picking him because he knows Clinton plus the only strategy he’s ever heard is RB RB is the first two rounds, so he’s probably missing out here.

3. Steve Smith- again, just picking a player he knows and filling a position of need.

4. Terrell Owens- hears about him every day in the news, always slips down draft boards because of the gamble associated with his personality but doesn’t stop this guy from taking him.

5. Jay Cutler- here is where he really starts getting hurt. Picks Jay Cutler to fill a need and because he’s heard all about him being traded to the Bears. He really loses out with much better value available for quarterbacks in my opinion.

6. Chad Johnson- hasn’t been in camp all year but this guy is shocked he’s still available. Tons of other huge potential like Lee Evans, Eddie Royal and DeSean Jackson but he knows Ocho Cinco therefore he plays it safe.

7. Darren Sproles- I may be giving him a little too much credit here backing up his #1 pick with a fairly solid value in the 7th round.
8. Kellen Winslow- knows he needs a TE so picks Winslow despite the risk…might actually be good value here though.

9. Torry Holt – here is where savvy players really take advantage of guys that don’t know what they’re doing. Missing out on more huge potential like Felix Jones, Donnie Avery or Anthony Gonzalez who might be available but they have no clue.

10. Philadelphia Defense- an older defense that lost Brian Dawkins, not the greatest value here.

11. Matt Hasselback- picks a backup qb instead of investing in another rb.

12. David Akers- picks a kicker and defense on the same team. Not a real big deal but I never liked it because if you’re defense is playing well, the team will probably be winning and the offense will have more of a tendency to run the ball and score less. Also too many players on the same team puts you at risk of being inconsistent due to poor matchups, especially in a tough division like the NFC East.

So as you can see the team is pretty old and injury prone. Also, not much potential here, you’re basically hoping that these players can keep putting up the same numbers. So they almost always end up picking players based on where they are at and not what they could become...that is what fantasy fooball is all about, especially toward the later rounds. Finding those players that have high ceilings and potential, but you'll only know of those players if you do your homework. Like the old adage says, "not preparing is preparing to fail".

Well, I guess there’s always the waiver wire. Keep an eye out for my all potential team coming soon.

Trading DeAngelo Williams for Thomas Jones and Clinton Portis?

I've been offered Thomas Jones and Clinton Portis for DeAngelo Williams in my FF league. My other backs are Marshawn Lynch (out until game 5), Knoshown Moreno, Ricky Williams, and Pierre Thomas. Do I take it?

I'd take it in a heart beat.

Portis is still a very good Running Back option and Thomas Jones is decent in his own right.

And plus, I just don't se DeAngelo Williams coming close to matching the stats he had last year.

As big as the Undertaker is, isn't it amazing how he "overcomes the odds"?

This keeps with his gimmick. He is supposed to be this dark, unstoppable force who rises from the dead to overcome all odds. If he were to lose with any frequency it would really harm his mystique. Not to mention the fact that Taker is a much better in-ring performer than any of those guys. I'm not the biggest Undertaker fan, but I can buy into his invincibility. For a guy like Cena, though, the same type of invincibility seems unrealistic.

Action Toys in Two Cultures

Coming from a non-American childhood, action toys are a novelty for me. Back in the country where my childhood passed we had totally different toys - including action toys. Most of the toys were based either on cartoons or on imagination of an artists in the doll factory. There were plush animals making squeaky noises, remote-controlled tanks and lunar vehicles (Lunohod-1 was the hit); there were dolls with really strange facial expressions that could close and open their eyes and smaller dolls that couldn't do anything but were a good throwing material.

We did not really have that much of action toys selection. There were tons of other stuff, but specifically action toys - like Figures From Halo, Aliens or even hockey players - no one actually thought it would be a good idea to produce. Of course, there were no Halo, neither Gears of War, nor even a single Action Figure of a hockey or soccer player. And forget about Elvis, that guy was outright banned while he was still alive.

So what kids did was made action toys themselves. There was a scrapyard nearby my school with all kinds of telephone wire cuts and pieces scattered around. We collected the wires and weave Action Figures from those wires as we saw fit. We had built armies of foot swordsmen, squadrons of horse raiders, platoons of riflemen, machine gunners and sub-machine gunners. Battles that raged on our floors were rival only to those of ancient China and its terracotta armies. The best part of all of this (at least our parents appreciated this the most) the whole enterprise was absolutely free. There was, however, an incentive, since all died soldiers (or rather materials they were made of) would be divided by the winner and the looser of the battle. Called that spoils of war.

These days, obviously, are not the days of Toy Soldier conscription. The action toys, to paraphrase a well-known motto, are few, are proud and are very expensive - at least to be bought in similar quantities. Oh, and the fun part of scouting a scrap yard for wires of necessary colors and actually building your action figure are long gone. Instead, the action figures - whether produced by McFarlane or Neca - are almost photo realistic representations of the original, no matter be it military action figures, NFL football player or a Halo 3 Master Chief. Even more so, manufactured action figures have more accessories, more movements, look better and overall, probably more fun to play with.

In all honesty, sometimes I miss the childhood with self-made action toys, armies of wire soldiers and all the fun associated with it. On the other hand, when I see how toddlers, teenagers, and sometimes very much grown-ups are happy when they get their hands on one of the latest action figures - or an old one they've been dreaming about for so long, I think it's a small price to pay.

Some coatings work to cut down on heat transfer and create energy efficiency. Dual-action coating is a special material that breaks down matter such as mold or mildew and makes cleaning much easier.

Glass Treatments -
Frosted glass and bubbled glass limit visibility through windows and therefore increase privacy. Natural light still makes it through the window, creating a private, well lit room.

Cut Down on Cranks -
